SDMS eighth-grade Exploring College and Careers students interested in STEM careers visited Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK) in Georgetown, KY. TMMK is Toyota’s most extensive vehicle manufacturing facility outside of Japan. TTMK covers 7.5 million square feet of floor space, which is the equivalent of 156 football fields. The students received a plant tour while riding on a tram. They saw how the Camry and RAV4 are assembled from start to finish. The TMMK tour guid...e pointed out the foundations of the Toyota Production System. The students learned about kaizen, or continuous improvement, just-in-time parts delivery, and the andon system, where TMMK team members can stop the line at any time to address quality concerns or issues. In the TMMK Visitor Center, the students could see and sit in the current models of vehicles and engines built in Georgetown and check out the interactive video displays.

8th grade Medical Detective groups have been focusing on jobs since returning from Spring Break. Students learned what to include in a resume. How to fill out an application for employment and scholarship opportunities. Students finished by receiving advice from building administrators, Mary Bailey, Patricia Johnson, and Grant Schiering. Administrators gave the students advice on interviewing well in order to receive the job they are seeking.
