SDMS partnered with WRBI to provide the students from South Dearborn Middle School, Milan Middle School, and Greendale Middle School the opportunity to participate in WRBI's Reality Check. Reality Check is a unique and valuable opportunity for 8th-grade students in our community to be a part of as it gives them a look into how life works as an adult. During Reality Check students move from station to station where businesses & volunteers help them navigate their life as a 28-...year-old adult. Students were able to choose their occupation from a list of careers based on their GPA and learned what their monthly salary would be. They also learned about opening a checking account & paying student loans, the number of dependents relying on them, paying taxes, grocery shopping, budgeting, child care expenses, the process of purchasing a home or renting an apartment, paying their bills (electric, gas, water, sewer, trash, etc.), fortunes and misfortunes they might experience, communications, purchasing a vehicle, what type of citizen they are, and how to save for the future. If they ran out of money before they made it to the end of the session they were able to visit the counselor who would help them go through the process of how to apply for a loan and the requirements to do so, or if a second job would be the best option for them. They also learned that voting is a very important part of being an American Citizen and received the chance to vote on a mock ballot. Reality Check takes the student out of their adolescence and gives them a sense of adult responsibility. They walk away having an idea of what their parent(s)/Guardian might be dealing with on a daily basis. 8th-grade Medical Detective students have been investigating the role of Forensic Scientists. They have been collecting evidence from a mock crime scene within their classroom. They collected and examined fingerprints, footprints, tire tracks, and weapon impressions.

South Dearborn Middle School students in Mr. Nobbe's class relied on Mr. Nobbe's guidance to finalize their research papers, reflecting their commitment to academic excellence and integrity. Through hard work and critical reviewing, these students refined their writing and their ability to communicate the research and analysis they completed.
